Housing and Accommodation

The accommodation available at Hokkaido University is one of the many advantages of studying here. There is a great variety and number of university dormitories available. There are a total of 795 rooms available, most of which are within walking distance to the campus and equipped with free high-speed internet access.

The Institute for International Collaboration can help organize initial accommodation for you, so that you don’t have to worry about looking for a place to stay upon arrival in Sapporo.

Student Dormitories

Residential life is an integral part of the Hokkaido University experience with around half of all international students living on campus during their studies here. We hope that our dormitories provide a sense of the distinctive experience you will have studying here. In total, we have six dormitories all located at and near Sapporo Campus. Most house students in single rooms. However, we do offer accommodation for married couples and families. Some dormitories are single-sex, others unisex, some mix Japanese students with International Students, and others are purely for international students. Each dormitory room comes equipped with fresh bedding and linen, as well as high speed internet access.

Renting Privately

The monthly rent for one room runs in the range of ¥30,000 – ¥40,000 ($252-$336 USD). Approximately 60% of International Students reside in private rental housing. Most private rental housing is unfurnished, so you will need to provide your own furniture and bedding. Also, you will need to have a guarantor co-sign the lease and pay the equivalent of 4 or 5 months rent to cover such things as the deposit, agent’s commission, and initial rent. If you need a guarantor, apply for a guaranty company. Learn more about here

Short-term Homestay

The Student Communication Station (SCS) offers you the chance to live with a Japanese family and learn more about the culture, customs and lifestyle in Japan.  If you want to stay in a typical Japanese home and spend time with a Japanese family, you may apply for a home-stay program at the Student Support Division. Submit your application at least 2 months prior to the date you wish to begin your home-stay.

The program is for a maximum of 6 days and 5 nights and is available in a range of locations across Hokkaido. There is no cost, but you must cover transportation costs to and from the home-stay and your own social expenses (e.g. if you attend events, go to the movies, etc.).

Please visit the Student Communcation Station to for applications and other inquiries.
